Two DMACC Players Named All-Americans

Two Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) baseball players have been named National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II All-Americans.

Tyler Robbins of Bettendorf and Jake Astor of North Liberty were named to the 2008 All-American First Team.

Robbins, an infielder, and Astor, a first basemen/designated hitter, were all named to the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) All-Conference First Team and to the All-Northwest District Team. Both Robbins and Astor are first year players for DMACC Head Baseball Coach Dan Fitzgerald. DMACC starting pitcher Eric Holmes of Wilton was also named to the All-Conference First Team and All-Northwest District Team.

Robbins, who was named ICCAC Player of the Year, set several new DMACC single season baseball records in 2008. Robbins set single season records with 20 home runs, 24 doubles, 246 at-bats, 89 runs scored and 97 hits in 2008. Robbins had 181 total bases for the DMACC Boone Bears, which also led the team. He started and played in all 66 games. Robbins hit .394 with a .472 on-base-percentage and was successful in 18 of his 22 stolen base attempts in 2008.

Astor set new DMACC single season records with 448 putouts and 476 chances. He led the team with a .442 batting average and a .510 on-base-percentage. His 96 hits and 21 doubles were second on the team, only bettered by Robbins’ record setting numbers. Astor had 152 total bases, 72 RBI and four triples while playing in 65 games for the Bears.

The two All-Americans helped the DMACC Bears to a 48-18 record as the team advanced to the NJCAA Division II World Series in Millington, TN. The 48 wins is also a new high, eclipsing the 41 wins set in 1982.

DMACC had six players named to the All-Conference First Team and three players named to the Honorable Mention All-Conference Team. Besides Robbins, Astor and Holmes, other DMACC players named to the ICCAC All-Conference First Team include: relief pitcher Mitch Mormann of Manchester, outfielder Matt Keys of Edina, MN and designated hitter Travis Meiners of Eyota, MN. The Honorable Mention All-Conference players from DMACC are pitcher David Conrad of Polk City, catcher Tanner Adam of Langdon, ND and infielder David Kempin of Wichita, KS.
