Freshman Sean Moore of Coralville had three hits and drove in four runs as the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) baseball team ran its winning streak to 16 games with a come-from-behind 8-6 win over Ellsworth Community College (ECC) in the first game of a doubleheader April 17 at the DMACC baseball diamond.
ECC won the second game 3-2 to end the Bears’ winning streak. With the loss DMACC saw its record dip to 29-11 for the season and 9-3 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) Division II standings. The Bears, ranked 10th in the latest National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, remain atop the conference standings.
The opening game saw ECC score six runs in the top of the third inning, but the Bears responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame and then took the lead with five runs in the bottom of the fourth. DMACC added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth and freshman Brandon Peterson of Savage, Minn., retired the Panthers in order in the top of the seventh to preserve the victory and record his third save of the season.
Moore singled home two runs in the DMACC third and drove in two more runs with a single in the fourth inning. Sophomores John Loeffler of Burnsville, Minn., Sean Borman of Minnetonka, Minn., and Greg Larpenter of Urbandale also had run-scoring singles in the game for DMACC. Freshman Gabby De Varona of Pembroke Pines, Fla., drove in a run with a base hit.
Sophomore Dylan Thomas of Lakeville, Minn., picked up his fifth win of the season against two losses after relieving sophomore Drew Freie of Wilton in the third inning. Thomas allowed one hit over three and one-third innings, and struck out three batters.
ECC’s Mario Baez tossed a seven-hitter and Francis Rodriguez smacked a two-run homer in the first inning as the Panthers took the second game. DMACC tied it at 2-2 in the bottom of the second when De Varona singled and scored on an error and freshman Blake Schmit of Eden Prairie, Minn., doubled and scored on a base hit by freshman Jesus Navarro of Barquisimeto, Venezuela. Schmit led the Bears with three hits in the game.
ECC scored the winning run off freshman Austin Urban of Johnstown, Penn., in the top of the fifth. Urban, who suffered his fourth loss of the season against two victories, gave up three runs on five hits. He struck out seven and walked four.
DMACC took both ends of a doubleheader on April 16, winning by identical scores of 10-0. Both games were called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.
Sophomore Ryan Torgerson of Johnston tossed a two hitter and struck out eight to get the win in the first game. Torgerson, who improved to 5-4, recorded eight strikeouts and did not walk a batter. De Varona, Larpenter and Schmit had two hits apiece and Loeffler drove in two runs for the Bears.
Freshman Hebraim Cordova of Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, Moore and freshman Colin Keefe of Woodbury, Minn., drove in two runs each to lead DMACC in the second game. Freshman Alex Crawford of Wilton scattered five hits, struck out seven and walked one to earn his seventh win of the season against one loss.
DMACC will host Marshalltown Community College in one nine-inning game April 19 at the DMACC baseball field. Game time is 2 p.m.
