Brooks McKowen, the all-time Iowa high school career and single-season scoring leader and a three-year starter for the University of Northern Iowa, has been hired as an assistant basketball coach at Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) after serving as a member of the UNI staff for the past three seasons.

McKowen played prep basketball at Wapsie Valley High School near Fairbank and finished his career with 2,831 points. As a senior, he set the single-season scoring record with 1,002 points.

McKowen was named Iowa's "Mr. Basketball" by the Iowa Newspaper Association as a high school senior. He averaged 35.8 points and 11.2 rebounds during his final prep season and made 102 of 304 three-pointers that year. He was named captain of the Class 2A all-tournament team after leading the Warriors to a second-place finish in the state tournament and was a three-time first team all-state selection.

McKowen was the starting point guard on three consecutive NCAA tournament teams while at UNI from2004-2007. Following his graduation from UNI, he joined the Panthers staff as a graduate assistant and served in that capacity for two seasons. He was the team's video coordinator during the 2009-2010 season.

"I have known (UNI) coach Ben Jacobson for quite awhile and through (the UNI staff) learned that Brooks was looking for an opportunity to get into a full-time assistant coaching position," said DMACC Men's Basketball Coach BJ McGinn. "He's been on staff with a very successful program and been a part of five NCAA tournament appearances, three as a player and two as a coach. He definitely knows what it takes to achieve success and he's been around great coaches in (former UNI, Iowa State and Creighton head coach Greg) Coach McDermott and Coach Jacobson.

"My dream was to play college basketball and someday be a college basketball coach,' McKowen said. "At this level you're really involved in a lot of stuff and that's one thing I really wanted to do. I'll be involved in just about every aspect of the game. I think I've got a lot to bring to the guards. I know a lot of different drills and being a college point guard is a big transition from high school. Hopefully, I have a lot of knowledge I can help these guys along with."

McKowen will be involved in every aspect of the DMACC program.

"Having been in his shoes ten years ago, I understand the importance of being involved as an assistant in all parts of the profession," McGinn said. "Brooks did a great job at UNI and has the passion for the game that it takes succeed as a coach. He will be in charge of coordinating our recruiting efforts, our player development and individual workouts, strength and conditioning, scouting of opponents, and academics. He's going to be a tremendous asset for us, and I am very excited to have Brooks with us here at DMACC."
