After opening the season with 11 consecutive victories, the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) men’s basketball team suffered its first loss of the season when Indian Hills Community College (IHCC) defeated the Bears 64-51 Dec. 4 in the first round of the Emerson Classic at Marshalltown.
DMACC, ranked second in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, bounced back in the second round, defeating Milwaukee Area Technical College 81-75 on Dec. 5.
Sophomore Kannon Burrage of Davenport paced the Bears in both games. Burrage scored 21 points in the loss to IHCC and had 24 points in the victory against Milwaukee Tech.
DMACC trailed IHCC, an NJCAA Division I program, 33-16 at the half after hitting just six of 27 field goal attempts in the opening half. The Bears recovered a bit in the second half, making 12 of 29 attempts from the field and outscored the Falcons 36-31. Sophomore Hal Bateman of Davenport and freshman Cole Martin of Omaha, Neb., scored eight points apiece for DMACC and freshman Kurtis Phillips of Adelaide, Australia, grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Sophomore Mike Thompson of Bettendorf and Bateman scored 19 and 14 points respectively in the win against Milwaukee Tech. DMACC led 39-33 at halftime. Thompson led the Bears in rebounding with nine boards and Bateman had nine assists, eight rebounds and three steals.
DMACC will host the Clarke College junior varsity on Dec. 12 in its final game before Christmas break.
