Burrage, Hicks Lead DMACC Men Past Southwestern, 61-44

Sophomores Kannon Burrage of East Moline, Ill., and E.J. Hicks of Davenport scored 21 and 12 points respectively as the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) men’s basketball team defeated Southwestern Community College (SWCC) 61-44 Feb. 9 at the DMACC gymnasium.

The Bears improved to 20-5 overall with the victory. DMACC is 6-4 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

Sophomores Hal Bateman of Davenport and Jordan Young of Parkersburg scored eight points apiece in the win and Bateman came away with 10 rebounds, all off the defensive glass, to lead the Bears to a 42-31 advantage on the boards. Bateman also had nine assists in the contest.

DMACC had an early 19-12 lead before an 11-5 run helped the Spartans (13-11, 4-7) close the gap to 24-23 at halftime. The Bears opened the second half with nine unanswered points to take a 33-23 lead and SWCC never got closer than eight points the rest of the way. DMACC led by as many as 19 points twice in the second half.

The Bears play North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) Feb. 12 at Mason City. Game time is 4 p.m.
