The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) men’s and women’s golf teams competed in the Iowa Central Community College Invitational at the Fort Dodge Country Club on Friday, Sept. 17, and traveled to Mason City on Sept. 21 for the North Iowa Area Community College Fall Invite.
Ashley Bloemendaal of Rock Rapids fired an 88 and Staci Hillygus of Marshalltown added a 90 to lead the DMACC women to the team championship in the ICCC Invitational. The Bears got scores of 91 from Mandy Kohlhaas of Lu Verne and 93 from Kenidy Eckerman of Carroll for a 362 total, 13 shots better than runner-up American Institute of Business. AIB’s Brittany Livengood took medalist honors with an 84.
DMACC’s Matt Mikkelsen of Panora took medalist honors with a 74 and Collin Hackett of Carroll added a 78 as the Bears won the men’s team championship with a score of 316. Taylor Eichinger of Huxley and Austin Gregersen of Gilbert rounded out the DMACC total with scores of 81 and 83 respectively. NIACC and the Simpson College junior varsity tied for second at 323.
The DMACC women finished second and the men placed third at the NIACC Fall Invite on Tuesday at the Highland Park Golf Course in Mason City.
Kohlhaas shot an 87 and Bloemendaal had a 90 as the DMACC women shot 364 strokes to finish 20 strokes behind Iowa Western Community College. Other DMACC scores included a 93 by Hillygus and a 94 from Anna Hoss of Spirit Lake. Iowa Western’s Ashley Hinncks took medalist honors with a 74.
Mikkelsen’s 72 and a 76 by Joey Lester of Gilbert helped the DMACC men to a 304 total and a third-place finish behind Iowa Lakes (300) and Iowa Lakes Blue (303). Hackett added a 77 for the Bears and Gregersen finished with a 79. DMACC finished six strokes ahead of Iowa Central.
The DMACC women will compete in the Iowa Lakes Fall Invite Friday and Saturday at Books National Golf Club in Okoboji. The DMACC men and women will host the DMACC Invite on Sept. 29 at Cedar Pointe Golf Course in Boone.
The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women’s volleyball team saw its five-match winning streak come to an end Wednesday in Cedar Rapids when Kirkwood Community College handed the Bears a 3-0 loss.
Kirkwood entered the match ranked 17th in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) poll released on Wednesday. DMACC, which fell to 10-7, entered the match as the 20th-ranked team in the nation after falling out of the rankings the past two weeks.
Freshman Maggie Vondrak of Sioux City and sophomore Mikayla Overturf of Nora Springs led the Bears with 10 and seven kills respectively. Vondrak also had a team-high seven digs.
Sophomore Sarah Davidson of Springville led DMACC in blocks with four and sophomore Natalie Weis of Bettendorf finished with 32 assists. Elizabeth Ihnen, a freshman from Sheldon, had three ace serves.
DMACC travels to Champaign, Ill., for the Parkland Tournament this weekend. The Bears will face unranked John A. Logan College and No. 14 Owens Community College on Sept. 24, and will play sixth-ranked Illinois Central College and unranked Kalamazoo Valley Community College on Sept. 25. DMACC took a 3-0 decision from Illinois Central Sept. 10 at the Kirkwood Tournament.
The Bears return home to face No. 10 Iowa Lakes Community College on Sept. 29.
