DMACC Volleyball Team Wins Fourth Consecutive Match

The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women’s volleyball team won its fourth consecutive match Wednesday night, defeating Southwestern Community College 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-15).

“We wanted to get a few runs going, which we did,” DMACC coach Patty Harrison said. “The freshman are kind of figuring it all out and we’re having a little fun along the way.”

Freshman middle hitter Erin Smith, who had 11 kills and three blocks, led the Bears to the win. Freshmen Maggie Vondrak and Mary Jo Twiford added seven kills apiece and Twiford finished with a team high four blocks. Elizabeth Ihnen contributed six ace serves, Natalie Weis had 34 assists and Jamie Buchman and Vondrak finished with 10 and seven digs respectively.

The match afforded Harrison an opportunity to play virtually her entire roster.

“We’re trying to get some of the girls in and see what they can do,” Harrison said. “They’ve been really working hard in practice and I want to get those freshmen and some of those sophomores on the court.”

DMACC used one or two runs in each game to put the match away. The Bears trailed 4-3 in the first game before an 8-1 run put them in charge at 11-5. Twiford keyed the spurt with three kills.

Southwestern opened up an 11-8 lead in the second game and held a 12-11 advantage before a 13-1 run put DMACC ahead 24-13. The run came behind three kills and three ace serves by Ihnen and three kills from Smith.

DMACC fell behind 5-4 in the third game when three kills each by Smith and two by Vondrak help lift the Bears to an 11-6 advantage. They led 16-12 before closing out the match on a 9-3 run.

The Bears’ four wins have come against Kishwaukee College, Iowa Central Community College, North Iowa Area Community College and Southwestern Community College. DMACC has won its last 12 games during the win streak.
