Iowa Lakes Tops DMACC in Region XI-B Championship Match

November 8, 2010

Second-ranked Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) handed the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women’s volleyball team a 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-20) loss in the Region XI-B championship match Nov. 6 at Mason City.

DMACC, which ended the season with a 26-15 record, advanced to the championship match after beating Southeastern Community College (SECC) 3-1 in a semifinal match on Nov. 5. Iowa Lakes moved ahead after a 3-0 semifinal win against Marshalltown Community College, also on Nov. 5

“You go into the regional tournament thinking you have a decent shot and then your defensive specialist (sophomore Sarah Tjaden of Lake View) and your setter (sophomore Natalie Weis of Bettendorf) are sick,” DMACC coach Patty Harrison said. “Tjaden didn’t play at all on Nov. 5 and we had Weis rotating out part-time and were using a setter who hadn’t played much.”

The loss ended DMACC’s run of three consecutive appearances in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II Volleyball National Championships. ILCC will make its fourth consecutive trip to the national tournament. The Lakers take a 37-7 record into the competition, including a 16-match winning streak.

“I was disappointed in the outcome, but Iowa Lakes has a good ball club,” said Harrison, who led DMACC to a 3-2 win against ILCC during the regular season.

Freshmen Maggie Vondrak of Sioux City and Elizabeth Ihnen of Sheldon led the Bears with six and five kills respectively. Vondrak also had a team-high eight digs and Weis finished with 16 assists and seven digs. Freshman Jamie Buchmann of Sioux City had one service ace and sophomore Tiffany Bormann of Preston finished with four blocks.

DMACC defeated SECC 25-17, 25-16, 15-25, 25-23 in the semifinals. Ihnen led the Bears with 14 kills and three blocks and sophomore Mikayla Overturf of Nora Springs and Vondrak finished with 13 and 12 kills respectively. Overturf also contributed two service aces and three blocks, Weis finished with 21 assists, Buchmann and Vondrak had 11 digs apiece and Bormann finished with three blocks.
