Bears Take Four Matches at Crossover Tournament

The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women’s volleyball team won all four of their matches at the Crossover Tournament Oct. 22-23 in Marshalltown.

The Bears went 3-0 against Marshalltown Community College (MCC) and Ellsworth Community College (ECC) respectively on Oct. 22, and beat Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) 3-1 before hanging a 3-0 loss on North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) on Oct. 23.

DMACC has won the last six matches and has lost just four of its last 18 games during the streak. The Bears have improved to 24-14 for the season.

Freshman Maggie Vondrak of Sioux City and sophomore Mikayla Overturf of Nora Springs led DMACC to a 25-16, 25-22, 25-17 win against MCC with 11 and eight kills respectively. Sophomore Tiffany Bormann of Preston had three blocks and sophomore Natalie Wies of Bettendorf finished with 28 assists and three service aces. Sophomore Sarah Tjaden of Lake View and freshman Jamie Buchmann of Sioux City topped the team in digs with 14 and 10 respectively.

Sophomore Christina Richter of Bancroft and Bormann led DMACC to a 25-18, 25-14, 25-22 win against ECC with 12 and nine kills respectively. Freshman Elizabeth Ihnen of Sheldon contributed two blocks, Weis added 36 assists and freshman Sarah Kirkegaard of Cedar Rapids and Tjaden had two service aces each. Tjaden and Vondrak led the Bears in digs with nine and eight respectively.

Bormann had 15 kills and six blocks and Vondrak added 14 kills and 14 digs as DMACC handed ICCC a 25-21, 23-25, 25-11, 25-21 loss. Weis finished the match with 51 assists and 15 digs, Kirkegaard had one service ace and 16 digs and Ihnen finished with one service ace.

Overturf had 11 kills and Richter finished with seven in DMACC’s 25-12, 25-16, 25-14 win against NIACC. Ihnen added two blocks, Weis had 29 assists and Buchmann finished with three service aces and nine digs.

DMACC closes out the regular season Oct. 27 against NIACC at the DMACC gymnasium.
