Volleyball Team tops Iowa Central in Conference Debut

September 1, 2010

The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women’s volleyball team began Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) competition with a 3-0 win against Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) Tuesday night.

Game scores were 25-16, 25-22, 25-14.

“I’m seeing a lot more confidence in the girls, especially the freshmen,” said DMACC coach Patty Harrison. “I think we gave up more points that Iowa Central earned.”

Freshman Maggie Vondrak led DMACC (2-3) with seven kills and three ace serves. Sophomore Mikayla Overturf added six kills and freshman Elizabeth Ihnen had five kills and four ace blocks. Mary Jo Twiford also had four ace blocks, Erin Smith contributed three blocks and Natalie Weis finished with 18 assists. Freshman Jamie Buchmann led the team in digs with 10.

“Vondrak is solid on the outside,” Harrison said. “Ihnen is coming on in the middle. She’s a tough gal. Erin Smith is doing a good job of blocking and is aggressive.”

DMACC hit .143 in the match.

“I think we have a great blocking team and our defense is really coming,” Harrison said. “We were a little shaky in the second game and ICCC got some momentum, but those are the kind of games you want to dig in and win. It’s always good to beat Iowa Central. We’re moving the ball a lot faster and our sets were a lot quicker.”

DMACC fell behind 7-4 in the first game before taking control behind a 7-0 run that up the Bears ahead 11-7. Vondrak keyed the run with three kills and DMACC never trailed the rest of the way. The Bears led by as many as 11 points at 22-11.

Four kills by Ihnen, two from Vondrak and one by Overturf helped DMACC turn an 8-3 deficit into an 11-9 advantage in the second game. Iowa Central stayed close and even led, 19-18 before two Triton hitting errors, a kill by Vondrak and an ace serve from Meaghan Daley put the Bears ahead 22-19. A kill by Ihnen and an Iowa Central hitting error gave DMACC the win.

Another run in the third game helped DMACC sweep the Tritons. The Bears led 11-8 when three Iowa Central mistakes, an ace serve by Vondrak and kills by Vondrak and Ihnen put DMACC ahead 17-8. ICCC never got closer than eight points the rest of the way.

DMACC, which improved to 2-3 with the win, was coming off a weekend trip to Overland Park, Kan., where the Bears dropped three of four matches at the Johnson County Tournament. DMACC lost its first three matches to No. 18 East Central (3-2), No. 4 Johnson County (3-1) and top-ranked Cowley County (3-0) respectively before defeating 12th-ranked Kiswaukee College by a 3-2 score.
