DMACC Defeats NIACC in First Round Tournament Play

Post Date: March 2, 2010

The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) Bears made six three-point field goals in the second half en route to a 67 to 53 victory over the North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) Trojans in the first round of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XI Division II Women’s Basketball Tournament.

The Bears recovered from a 33 to 25 halftime deficit thanks to the inside play of DMACC freshman center Tia May who scored a game high 28 points and the long-range shooting of freshman Katlyn Wood of Monroe and sophomore Marni Jacobsen of Spencer. Wood had 17 points and Jacobsen 10 points for the DMACC Bears.

The Trojans led by as many as 14 points in the first half thanks to sophomore reserve guard Amy Boley’s 18 points, all coming from beyond the three point arc. She connected on six of her seven three-point shots all in a five and a half minute scoring extravaganza in the opening period. Boley was held scoreless in the second half. NIACC scored only 20 second half points compared to 42 by the DMACC Bears.

The DMACC Bears finished the regular season with a 19-9 record, including two earlier victories over NIACC.

The Bears, under Head Coach Steve Krafcisin, will advance to the second round of the tournament to play at 6 p.m., Thursday, March 4 against the winner of the Kirkwood-Iowa Lakes game..
