JAPANESE WORLD WAR II POW SURVIVOR SPEAKS AT DMACC

Glenn McDole, (In the photo on the left) a distinguished veteran and Japanese prisoner of war survivor, speaks at the DMACC Ankeny Campus on Veteran's Day before a nearly filled Bldg. #6 Auditorium.  McDole recounted his remarkable story of survival as a prisoner and his eventual escape from the Japanese POW camp, Palawan.  McDole talked about how the Japanese, in December of 1944, ordered the POWs into trenches and then threw buckets of gasoline onto the trenches and set them on fire. McDole said he survived by digging out of the trench, falling 70 feet down a cliff used as a garbage pit and burying himself in the garage.  He later swam seven miles across the bay and eventually to freedom.  Following the presentation, Mechanical/Electrical Supervisor Bob Frisk talked with McDole.  McDole also signed copies of the book, “Last Man Out” written by Bob Wilbanks, about his ordeal as a prisoner and his eventual escape from Palawan.  McDole was also given a plaque which read, "in appreciation for the service of our heroes, fallen and living, who were so generous in all they gave."  McDole is the father of Glenda Johnson on the Ankeny Campus.
