Diesel Technology Career Academy

This Tech Prep program prepares students for a career in the area of diesel repair.  Instruction is in the repair, maintenance, and testing of diesel engines, power trains and components of trucks and construction equipment.  A total of 21 DMACC credits are available upon completion of all DMACC Career Academy course offerings.

  • DMACC Ankeny Campus
    Year 1: M-F 12:30-2:30pm;
    Year 2: M-F 8:00am-10:00am
Diesel Technology
What kind of work will this prepare me to do in the future?
  • Diagnose mechanical and functional failures in diesel/caterpillar equipment
  • Remove, repair, and install various components from diesel/caterpillar equipment
  • Diagnose and repair electrical and hydraulic systems
  • Modify existing machinery to improve or adapt from its original design
What other courses should I take while in high school to prepare me for this career?
Speech, Algebra I, Applied Math, Auto Mechanics, Electronics, General Business, Industrial Arts
 
DMACC credits you can earn while in high school:
Year One Classes
DSL 546 Power Trains I – 6 credits
Class and lab activities in the design and operation of drive train components including clutches, manual transmissions, drive lines, rear axles, and wheel bearings.
DSL 605 Hydraulics & Brakes – 5 credits
The study of basic mobile hydraulics. Introduces principles, components, fluid systems and circuits of hydraulic systems. Vehicle braking includes study of hydraulic and air brake systems.
Year Two Classes
DSL 145 Basic Electricity - 5 credits
An introduction to basic electricity and electronic principles that apply to diesel powered equipment. Systems and components covered include starting, charging, lighting and accessories.
DSL 555 Power Trains II – 5 credits
Instruction will include the basics of automatic transmissions, power shift transmissions, final drives and hydrostat drives.
