Auto Collision Career Academy

This Tech Prep program introduces students to the highly technological industry of Auto Collision and Repair.  Students will gain experience in the areas of basic shop operations, and procedures, welding, painting and shop safety. A total of 26 DMACC credits are available upon completion of all DMACC Career Academy course offerings.

Schedules:

  • DMACC Ankeny Campus
    Year 1: M-F 8:00-10:00am

  • Ames Career Academy/Hunziker Center
    Year 1: M-F 7:50-9:50am or 12:50-2:50pm;
    Year 2: M-F 10:00-11:50am

Automotive Collision Career

What kind of work will this prepare me to do in the future?
  • Use special machines to straighten and align damaged frames and uni-body sections
  • Remove damaged sections of body panels with plasma arc cutting, die grinder, or various metal cutting saws and weld in new sections
  • Prepare vehicle for spot repainting; partial and/or entire body repainting
  • Repair and care for automotive tools and equipment
  • Make damage estimations

DMACC credits you can earn while in high school:
Year One Classes
CRR 150 Basic Shop Safety – 1 credits
A course designed to acquaint the student with the hazards in an auto collision facility. Emphasis on EPA regulations, OSHA guidelines and personal health and safety in the shop area.
CRR 325 Sheet Metal Fundamentals – 5 credits
Automobile design, the materials used in construction, collision, and corrective forces, and procedures for repair and services are analyzed through class and lab study. Prerequisite: CRR 101 must be taken concurrently with or prior to this course.
CRR 101 Sheet Metal Welding – 2 credits
Basic skills will be developed in oxygen-acetylene fusion welding and flame cutting. Gas metal arc (MIG) welding equipment; and attain basic understanding of procedures related to auto collision area. Safety is emphasized.
CRR 841 Principles of Refinishing – 5 credits
This course will give the student an overall understanding of the complexities of today's auto refinishing. Developing industry standard preparation habits and spray painting skills with various chemicals will be studied.
CRR 742 Estimating Theory – 2 credits
Vehicle damage estimating skills are needed to provide a written report. This report can then be used as a repair guide, a legal document, an analysis report and for business evaluation. Ability to use estimating guides and write estimates accurately will be emphasized.
Year Two Classes
AUT 704 Auto Heating & AC – 4 credits
Provides instruction in the theory of operation of auto air conditioning and heating systems as well as diagnosing and servicing automotive air conditioning and heating systems.
CRR 877 Refinishing Applications - 7 credits
This course covers the application techniques and equipment used in auto collision repair shops for refinishing and will deal with potential problems with chemicals. Sheet metal and plastic parts repair and replacement in preparation for painting will also be studied in the lab. Shop and personal safety will be emphasized. Prerequisite: CRR 841
