Steve Schulz
Provost
Steve Schulz is the Provost at Des Moines Area Community College’s Carroll Campus, overseeing all administrative operations for the Carroll programs. Steve joined DMACC in 2004 to oversee DMACC’s 2+2 program affiliation with the University of Northern Iowa. This unique college offering allows students to complete their Associate of Arts (AA) degree in two years at DMACC in Carroll, then transfer to UNI, yet remain in Carroll, to finish their Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree from UNI at the DMACC Carroll Campus.
Before joining DMACC, Steve spent 13 years in the Carroll Community School District as a principal and then as district superintendent. He began his teaching career at Northeast Hamilton School District and also taught in the Nashua School District.
“Working at the college level has provided me an opportunity to see education from a different perspective, while continuing to help students in their academic and career development journey,” says Steve.
A graduate of Wartburg College, Steve earned his Master’s degree from UNI and received his Education Specialist degree from Drake University. He currently is working on his Ph.D. degree at Iowa State University. An avid outdoorsman, Steve’s interests include spending time with family, hunting and fishing.
John Brockelsby
Business Administration
John Brockelsby is a member of the Business Administration faculty at Des Moines Area Community College in Carroll. He joined the staff in 1987 and during his tenure has taught 34 different business-related courses. His courses include Business Law, Principles of Marketing, Human Resources and Business and Small Business Management. Before joining DMACC’s staff, he taught at Emory Riddell Aeronautical University in Florida. John has an undergraduate degree from the University of Nebraska-Omaha and received his Master’s degree in Management from Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri.

Rebecca Brown
Accounting and Business Administration
Rebecca Brown joined the faculty at Des Moines Area Community College in Carroll in 2001, where she is a full-time accounting instructor. Through both classroom and online courses, Rebecca offers students a variety of learning options. Prior to joining the DMACC Carroll faculty, Rebecca taught business math and small-business administration courses at Central Carolina Community College in North Carolina. A graduate of Meredith College in North Carolina, she also has an MBA degree in Accounting from Bellevue University in Bellevue, Nebraska.

Susan Davis
Nursing
Susan Davis is a member of the Nursing Department faculty at Des Moines Area Community College in Carroll. An instructor at DMACC since 2003, Susan leads a full schedule of courses including Family Health Nursing, Passport to Nursing, Nursing Seminar, Nursing Practice I, II and Professional Nursing Practice courses. Before joining DMACC’s staff, Susan was a nurse educator on the faculty of Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge, Iowa. She earned her Bachelor of Nursing degree from Briar Cliff College and her Master’s degree from Iowa State University. She is currently working on her Master’s in Nursing from the University of Wyoming. Away from the classroom, Susan is an avid world traveler, having journeyed to Russia and Europe several times.

Diane Eischeid
Business Technology
Diane Eischeid is a lab coordinator for the Business Technology Lab at the Des Moines Area Community College Carroll Campus. She joined the DMACC Carroll faculty in 1989 and works with students in the Business Technology program with independent course work. In addition, she also works with students who are taking online classes using Web CT. Diane received her undergraduate degree from Buena Vista University and is currently working on her Master’s degree from Creighton University. She enjoys walking and spending time with her family including three children in her spare time.

Val Enenbach
Academic Advisor and Adjunct Faculty
Many students at Des Moines Area Community College’s Carroll Campus are getting a guiding hand from Val Enenbach when deciding on coursework and their career path. Val has been an academic advisor at the Carroll Campus since 2002. In addition, Val is an adjunct DMACC faculty member who teaches coaching theory and athletic training courses. Before joining DMACC’s staff, Val was the Director of Aquatics at LaGrange College in LaGrange, Georgia, where she taught Water Safety Instruction, Lifeguard Training, First Aid and CPR, water aerobics and various physical education activity classes for both the college and community residents. She also was the head men’s and women’s swimming coach for LaGrange College. Val also was on Iowa Wesleyan College’s faculty for four years as a physical education instructor, head volleyball coach and head softball coach.
Val is a graduate of Briar Cliff College and the United States Sports Academy. She has also completed graduate work at the University of Northern Iowa.

Kim Fara
Academic Achievement Center
Math and Science Instructor
Kim Fara leads the programs and services at the Academic Achievement Center on Des Moines Area Community College’s Carroll Campus. Since joining the staff in 1991, Kim has led DMACC’s high school diploma program, Adult Literacy and provided academic support to students in Carroll. Previously she taught middle school science and math at St. Joseph’s School in Earling, Iowa. Kim earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Iowa and her Master’s degree from Drake University. She is currently working on her Ph.D. at Iowa State University. In Manning, Iowa, where she lives, she continues to make education a priority. Since 1994 she has been a member of the Manning Community School District school board.

Robert Galligan
Speech Instructor
Teaching students to speak properly and how to improve their presentation skills is Robert Galligan’s specialty. Since 1982 Robert has been sharing his speech and interpersonal communications knowledge and expertise with Des Moines Area Community College students in Carroll. His courses include Fundamentals of Oral Communications and Interpersonal Communications. While teaching part-time at DMACC, Robert spent 28 years teaching speech and coaching the speech and debate teams at Carroll Kuemper High School. He also taught high school speech at Dyersville Beckman High School in Dyersville, Iowa, and spent five years on the Loras College faculty. He’s also involved with high school speech contests across the state in his spare time, and he is a member of the Iowa High School Speech Association’s Hall of Fame. Away from the classroom, Robert and his wife are train enthusiasts and enjoy traveling the country by Amtrak train.

Pam Garvis
Nursing
Since 2002, nursing students at Des Moines Community College in Carroll have been benefiting from the knowledge and experience of Pam Garvis. Pam teaches a variety of nursing courses including Nursing Fundamentals, Mental Health Nursing and Nursing Practice III (the final practice course in the LPN curriculum). Before joining DMACC’s faculty, Pam was a nurse at Manning Regional Health Center for 10 years. While there, she was a CPR instructor and worked in the hospital’s substance abuse unit. Pam earned her associate nursing degree from DMACC and her Bachelor of Nursing degree from Briar Cliff College. She is currently finishing her Master’s degree in Nursing from the University of Wyoming. In her spare time, Pam and her husband operate an antique hobby business in Des Moines, Iowa. She is an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers and also enjoys bass fishing.

Paula Hansen
Business Administration
Paula Hansen has been part of the faculty at Carroll’s Des Moines Area Community College campus since 1989. She teaches business courses ranging from Marketing Principles to Personal Finance (online) to Business Financial Math. Prior to her DMACC career, Paula taught for five years at the community college and high school level. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of South Dakota and earned her Master’s degree in Business Education from Western Michigan in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Lori Harmening
Circle West—Audubon
When it comes to starting a business, many business owners have turned to Lori Harmening for guidance. Since 1991, many new business owners within 45 miles of Audubon have worked with Lori and the Circle West staff at Des Moines Area Community College to launch their operations. Lori works in seven western Iowa counties as a business consultant through Circle West, helping entrepreneurs to develop business and marketing plans and put in place all the major steps needed to successfully start a new business. A native of Carroll, Lori earned her undergraduate degree from Arizona State University and her Master’s in Business Administration from Iowa State University. After graduating from Arizona State, Lori got her business exposure working for Alpha Graphics, helping to open franchise operations for the company across the nation.
In her spare time, Lori shares her musical talents as a member of a local community chorus and plays trumpet in the Carroll symphony and jazz band.

Alice Hemmingsen
Circle West—Audubon
Many new businesses that have worked with the Circle West office of Des Moines Area Community College in Audubon can thank their company’s identity and good start to Alice Hemmingsen. Alice, the administrative assistant at Circle West, often provides graphic design, logo development and administrative support to business clients to support their start-up. A member of the Circle West staff since 1988, Alice works closely with new Circle West business clients in a 45-mile radius from Audubon. A native of Fremont, Nebraska, Alice attended Nebraska College of Business in Omaha. Away from work, Alice enjoys spending time with her husband and their three children, doing crafts and reading.

Richard Hogan
Academic Advisor
Richard Hogan is an Academic Advisor to students at the Des Moines Area Community College in Carroll. On faculty since 1974, he has had a hand in shaping the career paths for DMACC students longer than any other faculty member. Now a full-time advisor, he first joined the DMACC staff as an evening adjunct faculty member while working full-time as a high school counselor at Carroll High School. Prior to moving to Carroll, Richard served for 10 years at St. Ansgar High School where he taught social studies, psychology, Latin and physical education and in addition coached basketball and baseball. He received his undergraduate degree from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, and earned his Master’s degree from Bemidji State University. He spends his spare time with his grandchildren, and also enjoys fishing and golfing.

Lou Ann Knorr
Business, Management and Information Technology
Since 1985, Business, Management and Information Technology students at DMACC’s Carroll Campus have benefited from Lou Ann Knorr’s teachings. In her business computer applications and general business courses, Lou Ann shares her computer skills and business office knowledge. She also draws on her professional work experience from the private sector to prepare students. She earned her undergraduate degree from Concordia College and her Master’s degree from Minnesota State University, Moorhead, Minnesota. An avid learner, she is now enrolled in classes at the University of Nebraska.

Nancy Loeck
Psychology
Nancy Loeck has been a long-time psychology instructor at Des Moines Area Community College in Carroll, and joined the faculty full-time in 2005. With a background in counseling, Nancy teaches a variety of Psychology courses including Social Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, Development Psychology and Courtship, Marriage and Family Sociology. An adjunct faculty member for many years, Nancy was a counselor in the Carroll Community School District before joining the DMACC faculty full-time. Nancy attended Waldorf Community College and then received her undergraduate degree from Buena Vista University and her Master’s degree in Counseling Education from Iowa State University.

Dr. Mark Maggio
Economics and Sociology
Dr. Mark Maggio is a professor of Economics and Sociology at Des Moines Area Community College in Carroll. He joined the faculty in 2006, bringing his teaching and research knowledge to DMACC where he teaches several Economics courses, Statistics, Sociology and a Social Problems course. Before joining DMACC’s faculty, Dr. Maggio spent a combined 17 years on faculty at George Mason University and Iowa State University. He graduated from Macalester College with an undergraduate degree, earned his Master’s degree in Public Administration at Syracuse University and received his doctoral degree in Public Policy from George Mason University. In his spare time, he is restoring a 140-year old farmhouse on his central Iowa farm, where he raises sheep, cattle and has started a Christmas tree farm.

Diane Miller
Administrative Assistant
Diane Miller is the Administrative Assistant to the Provost at Des Moines Area Community College in Carroll. Originally from Des Moines, she earned her education degree from Drake University and was an elementary school teacher in Urbandale, Iowa. She joined the DMACC Carroll staff in 1992.

JoAnn Morlan
Advisor, Admissions, Theatre & Speech
Every student who has enrolled for a class at Des Moines Area Community College’s Carroll Campus since 1989 has known JoAnn Morlan. JoAnn, an Academic Advisor and Admissions Specialist for DMACC in Carroll, also is an adjunct professor of Drama and Oral Communication. Along with her administrative role, she teaches a variety of courses including Introduction to Theatre, Fundamentals of Oral Communications, Acting I, Orientation to College, Transfer Planning, and Theatre Techniques. A drama and speech coach for 27 years, JoAnn says her theatre interests started as a high school student in Boone. JoAnn attended DMACC in Boone and then earned her undergraduate degree from Iowa State University and has a Master’s degree in Communications Studies from the University of Northern Iowa.

Lewis Orcutt
Buildings and Grounds Maintenance—Carroll Campus
Since 1986, when Des Moines Area Community college opened its current campus facility in Carroll, Lewis Orcutt has been making sure the buildings and campus are in prime shape. Lew joined the Buildings and Grounds operations staff after retiring from the United States Air Force, where he was involved with early warning radar and recruiting and as an instructor teaching electronics, ham radio operations, computer logic and steam engineering during his 20-year career. Lew attended the Alexandria Vocational Technical College in Alexandria, Minnesota, and community college while in the Air Force.
In his spare time, Lew enjoys his hobbies of ham radio operating, computers, clock repairing, camping, traveling and spending time with his grandchildren.

Tim Rial
Mathematics
Since 1999 Tim Rial has been part of the Des Moines Area Community College in Carroll, teaching a variety of math courses. His courses include Calculus, Statistics, Finite Math, Algebra and Math for Elementary Teachers. Prior to joining DMACC’s staff, Tim was a faculty member at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa. Tim received his undergraduate and Master’s degrees from the University of Northern Iowa, and also has completed some coursework toward his doctorate at the University of Illinois, where he was a teaching assistant. While at UNI, he was a receiver on the football team, and a teammate of National Football League quarterback and Super Bowl most valuable player Kurt Warner. Away from the classroom, Tim enjoys time with his family including four children, along with playing golf, fishing, playing football and softball.

Jane Riley
Library Assistant
Since 2004, Jane Riley has been helping students with their library needs as the library assistant at Des Moines Area Community College in Carroll. Along with helping students to find resources, Jane’s job consists of circulation duties, maintaining periodical databases and other library materials. She is also the college’s ICN coordinator. Jane graduated from DMACC in Carroll with an associate’s degree. In her spare time, Jane enjoys golfing and reading.

Dave Rubner
Custodian
Dave Rubner is a member of the Custodial staff at Des Moines Area Community College in Carroll. A native of Nemaha, Iowa, Dave joined the staff in 1986. Prior to coming to DMACC, Dave served for 22 years in the National Guard in both the Army and Air Force branches. Away from work, Dave can often be found fishing, golfing or working on a project at his home in Maple River.

Student Services, Registration
Christy Schettler oversees Student Services and Registration at Des Moines Area Community College in Carroll. Since beginning with the College in 2006, she has handled all student registrations to enroll them for coursework. Previously, she was a volunteer coordinator in the Carroll Community School District and most recently worked for her church in Carroll. Originally from Alabama, she earned her associate's degree in business from DMACC and currently is working on her undergraduate degree in human resources and business administration at Buena Vista University.

Renee Schon
Student Services
Renee Schon leads the Student Services–Iowa New Choices program for Des Moines Area Community College in Carroll. Joining the staff in 1988, Renee oversees DMACC’s program that works closely with area agencies to provide academic and financial aid counseling, career planning, child care and transportation financial assistance to single and displaced homemakers in the area. Prior to DMACC, Renee worked for social service agencies including being a case manager for developmentally disabled individuals at New Hope Village in Carroll. Renee has her undergraduate degree from Iowa State University. In her spare time, Renee enjoys running, golf and is busy with the activities of her four children.

Jennifer Schulte
Bookstore Manager
Jennifer Schulte joined the Des Moines Area Community College in Carroll in March 2007 to oversee the campus bookstore. Originally from Carroll, Jennifer has an undergraduate degree from Iowa State University in Communication Studies and plans to pursue a Master’s degree in Business and Education Administration.

Carolyn Siemann
English and History
Carolyn Siemann has been part of the DMACC Carroll Campus faculty since January 1989. Carolyn leads DMACC’s English and History course study for students, teaching a variety of composition courses, Western Civilization, Literature and Political Science. She graduated from the University of Iowa with her undergraduate degree and earned her Master’s degree from Iowa State University.

Dennis Smith
Automotive Technology
Dennis Smith has been interested in cars since his high school days when he was growing up in Ida Grove, and since 2003 he has shared that love for automotives with Des Moines Area Community College students in Carroll. He leads the high school shared program of DMACC’s Automotive Technology Department, teaching students basic automotive systems and service to prepare them for careers in automotives. Dennis is a certified master technician by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. He currently is working on his undergraduate degree from the University of Northern Iowa, and in his spare time, Dennis keeps his car interest going as a licensed drag car racer.

Jack Thompson
Technology Resource Center
Jack Thompson is the coordinator and instructor for the Technology Resource Center at the Des Moines Area Community College campus in Carroll. Jack joined the faculty in 1999 and leads courses related to the Industrial Electro-Mechanical Technology program and laboratory courses associated with the DMACC and University of Northern Iowa 2 + 2 program. He also coordinates the center’s shared program classes with up to 10 local area high schools, teaching basic electricity and other technology courses. Prior to joining DMACC’s staff, Jack was a plant electrician with Polaris Industries in Spirit Lake, Iowa. He attended college at Southwest Technical College in Minnesota and South Dakota State University and currently is a student in the DMACC and UNI 2 + 2 program.

Ann Vincent
Spanish instructor
Ann Vincent teaches Spanish courses to students at the Des Moines Area Community College campus in Carroll. She joined the DMACC faculty in 1995 and teaches several levels of Spanish classes. While teaching at DMACC, she also taught Spanish in the ArWeVa school district for 10 years and currently teaches Spanish exploratories at Carroll Middle School. Ann earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Iowa, and her Spanish teaching certification from Iowa State University. She has earned her Master’s degree from the University of Florida. Away from the classroom, she is busy with her two children and is an avid scrapbooker.

Cheri Wanser
Test Administrator
Even before students attend their first class at Des Moines Area Community College in Carroll, Cheri Wanser has had a hand in their enrollment. That’s because one of Cheri’s roles is to oversee entrance testing for students. Since joining the DMACC staff in 1998, Cheri also has been the advisor to the Student Activities Council and oversees graduation ceremonies. A two-time graduate of DMACC in Carroll, Cheri has an associate degree in Business and another in Liberal Arts. In her spare time, Cheri and her husband are active in the American Legion, and she enjoys crafts, sewing, crocheting and making greeting cards.

Jan Weitl
Financial Aid, Student Accounts
Jan Weitl oversees the student Financial Aid and Student Accounts operations at Des Moines Area Community College’s Carroll Campus. Since 1996 she has been counseling students about college tuition assistance, guiding them through the financial aid programs that are available and informing them about new scholarship offerings that can support their college education at DMACC.

Christie Whitaker
Business Technology
Christie Whitaker is a Systems Analyst and Lab Assistant in the Des Moines Area Community College Business Technology Department at the Carroll Campus. She joined the DMACC Carroll staff in 1989 and is a Lab Assistant in the business technology laboratory, overseeing students' work in their independent study courses. In her campus systems analyst role, Christie oversees the computer network for the DMACC Carroll Campus. Area residents in many communities around the Carroll area have also benefited from Christie’s vast computer expertise through adult education courses she has taught. A native of Lidderdale, Iowa, Christie attended DMACC in Carroll. She enjoys spending her spare time with her family, walking, and purchasing and restoring antiques.
