Welcome to the Urban Campus Biology Department Home Page

Des Moines Area Community College’s Urban Campus is located in downtown Des Moines, Iowa. Our campus has the most diverse population of college students in Iowa. Our diversity allows students to become acquainted with people from all over the world and of all races. This adds to the community college experience of our students.

DMACC’s Urban Campus Biology Department consists of three full-time faculty, three to four part-time faculty, and a science lab assistant (shared with chemistry). We have one biology classroom and it is in almost constant use, mostly for laboratory sessions.

Biology Classes offered at DMACC’s Urban Campus include:

Full-time Biology Faculty

Barbara Krumhardt, Ph.D., "Barb", Science Group Leader
Barb produced the Whitefish Mitosis, Lillium Meiosis, and Human Parasites pages. She wrote the text of the Drosophila page.

H. E. Hemenway, M.S., "Sir Ace"

Ace produced the Human Tissues and Human Blood Cells pages.

A. S. Helgeson, M.S., "Scott"

Scott produced the Human Pathogens and Fungi pages.
Science Lab Assistant

Catharine Dimit, B.S., "Cathy"

Cathy produced the Drosophilia page.

Pages produced by the Biology Department of Urban campus

Bacteria - Some Interesting Bacteria and Facts About Them

Drosophilia - Mutant strains of Drosophila melanogaster are commonly used in freshman biology labs to illustrate the principles of genetics. Genetics researchers also use this species. The loci of many mutations are well documented.

Fungi - A superficial tour of the Fascinating world of Fungi.

Human Parasites - Parasitic diseases in humans are caused by protozoans and helminthes. The cysts and trophozoite forms of protozoans are most often found in feces but are also found in other tissues or excreta. The helminthes are most often detected by the presence of their eggs in feces; but these, too, can be found in tissues or other excreta.

Human Tissues and Human Blood Cells pages.

Meiosis - is reduction division; the cells produced contain half the number of chromosomes as before meiosis.

Mitosis - is the process whereby one parent cell divides to become two daughter cells, without changing the chromosome number in the process.
