The Iowa Studies Center at Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) is beginning the second of 10 speaker’s series and teacher’s seminars.

“Double Talks—The World in Iowa: Past, Present and Future” will focus on topics such as politics, art, culture, sports and urbanization in a series of presentations to be held on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings from October 2007 through April 2008.

The second “Double Talks” event is “The World of Urbanization: Casting and Characterizing a Particular City” to be held from noon to 2:30 p.m., Fri., Nov. 2. A separate event, geared toward high school and college instructors, will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, Sat., Nov. 3. Both “Double Talk” events will be held in the Bldg. #7 Conference Center on the DMACC Ankeny Campus. All events are open to the public.

Des Moines Mayor Frank Cownie will introduce the speakers on Friday. Presentations will be made by Dr. David Danbom, history professor at North Dakota State University, and Dr. Sharon E. Wood, associate history professor at University of Nebraska at Omaha. Dr. Danbom will address the nature of the history profession regarding state and local history while encouraging more of this research. His most recent book is Going It Alone: Fargo Grapples with the Great Depression (2005). Dr. Wood recently won the 2006 Shambaugh Award for Iowa History with her book The Freedom of the Streets: Work, Citizenship, and Sexuality in a Guilded Age. Her talk will address her research about Davenport and 19th Century prostitution.

The events are free, although registration is required. To register, please contact Dr. Lisa Ossian at (515) 964-6568 or llossian@dmacc.edu. A lunch is available on Friday afternoons for $8.
