DMACC Offers Learning After Fifty-Five Program

Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) is offering a variety of classes specifically designed for the active 55 years and older adults who have a love for learning.

DMACC’s upcoming Learning After Fifty-Five (LAFF) program include a Digital Photography, Iowa’s Underground Railroad, Iowa’s Civil War Soldiers, Medicare Check-Up and Aspects of Social Security class.

Iowa’s Underground Railroad class (Course #25753) will be held on Tues., Feb. 5 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in Bldg. #18 Room 35 on the Ankeny Campus. The concept of the Underground Railroad in Iowa has been shrouded in myth and legend. Discover the realities and examine the issues surrounding this covert action.  The cost is $20. Advanced registration and payment are due by Thur., Jan. 31.

Iowa’s Civil War Soldiers class (Course #25754) will be held on Tues., Feb. 12 from 3 to 4:30 p.m., in Bldg. #18 Room 35 on the Ankeny Campus.  The many challenges that Iowa’s Civil War soldiers faced will be examined by comparing and contrasting the First Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment of 1861 with Iowa’s Colored Infantry of 1863.  The cost is $20.  Advanced registration and payment are due by Thur., Feb. 7.

The Medicare Check-Up class (Course #25680) will be held from 1 to 3:30 p.m., Wed., Feb. 13 in Bldg. #18 Room 35 on the Ankeny Campus.  Find out current information on Medicare supplement insurance, Advantage plans and drug coverage.  The program is presented by a representative of the Senior Health Insurance Information Program, Iowa Insurance Division. The cost is $29.  Advanced registration and payment are due by Fri., Feb. 8.         

The Digital Photography class (Course #25171) will be held on Tues., Feb. 19, Feb. 26 and Mar. 4 from 2:30 to 5 p.m. in Bldg. #18 Rm. 1 on the DMACC Ankeny Campus. In this class, you will learn about the features and settings of your camera, tips and tricks to improve your pictures, and finishing options. Participants are asked to bring their camera and manual to the class.  The cost is $69.   Advanced registration and payment are due by Thur., Feb. 14.

The Aspects of Social Security class (Course #25742) will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m., Wed., Feb. 27 in Bldg. #18 Room 35 on the Ankeny Campus.   This class will answer questions such as: “Should I take early retirement?” “What can I expect in terms of retirement, disability and survivor benefits?”  “When is the best time to file?’

The cost is $25.  Advanced registration and payment are due by Fri., Feb. 22.
