Banished Documentary
February 5, 2008
Three U.S. towns eliminated African Americans from their communities 100 years ago. As part of Des Moines Area Community College’s (DMACC’s) Black History Month activities, the DMACC Newton and Boone Campuses, DMACC’s Diversity Commission, and statewide Iowa Public Television are co-sponsoring free screenings of the documentary, Banished, which visits some of the whitest counties in the country to confront the legacy of “banishment”–a wave of racial purging that tore through the South 100 years ago. The screenings are free and open to the public.
Banished will be shown at DMACC Boone & Newton campuses at the following times:
- February 5, 2008, 9:40 a.m., Boone Campus Theatre [view flyer]
- February 5, 2008, 11:15 a.m., Newton Campus, Room 118 [view flyer]
- February 5, 2008, 6:00 p.m., Boone Campus Theatre [view flyer]
- February 14, 2008, 11:15 a.m., Urban Campus, Rooms 124/126
In the film, award-winning filmmaker Marco Williams sits down with Ku Klux Klan leaders, white residents of these all-white communities, as well as descendants of those who were banished, opening the wounds of history.
Banished will be broadcast at 10:30 p.m., Sun., Feb. 24 on the Emmy Award-winning PBS series Independent Lens on statewide IowaPublic Television.
