DMACC Hosts Seminar on the World of Culture

The Iowa Studies Center at Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) is hosting a seminar on The World of Culture to be held Fri., Feb. 15 and Sat., Feb. 16.
“Double Talks—The World in Iowa: Past, Present and Future” will focus on topics such as politics, art, culture, sports and urbanization in a series of presentations to be held on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings from October 2007 through April 2008.
The seventh “Double Talks” event is “The World of Culture: Older Struggles & Continuing Battles on the Prairies” to be held from noon to 1:30 p.m., Fri., Feb. 15. A separate event, geared toward high school and college instructors, will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, Sat., Feb. 16. Both “Double Talk” events will be held in the Bldg. #7 Conference Center on the DMACC Ankeny Campus. All events are open to the public.
Filmmakers Kelly and Tammy Rundle, who created Lost Nation: The Ioway,” will introduce the speakers. University of Wisconsin-Manitowoc History Professor Dr. Kerry Trask will speak on “Black Hawk—The Battle for the Heart of America” and Augustana College History/Women’s Studies Assistant Professor Dr. Jane Simonsen will speak on “Making Home Work: Domesticity and Native American Assimilation in American West, 1860-1919.”

The Speaker’s Series and Teacher’s Seminars are sponsored by grants from Humanities Iowa and the State Historical Society, Inc.
