DMACC's Celebration of the Literary Arts

Des Moines Area Community College’s (DMACC’s) sixth annual Celebration of the Literary Arts will be held April 14-16 with classroom visits to all six DMACC campuses by area writers and literary instructors.

Two prose writers and two poets will read from their works on the DMACC Ankeny Campus in the Bldg. #5 Student Center from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wed., Apr. 16:  The four include:   

  • University of Colorado Professor and poet Ruth Ellen Kocher, who is the author of three poetry collections, One Girl Babylon, When the Moon Knows You’re Wandering and Desdemona’s Fire.
  • Washburn University English Professor and Writer-in-Residence Thomas Fox Averill, who has written Passes at the Moon and Seeing Mona Naked, as well as novels Secrets of the Tsil Café and The Slow Air of Ewan MacPherson.
  • Indiana University Professor and poet Ross Gay, whose first poetry collection, Against Which, was published in 2006
  • University of Arkansas in Fayetteville Fiction Professor Molly Giles, who is the author of two prize-winning collections of short stories, Rough Translations and Creek Walk, and a novel, Iron Shoes.

Carey Crowson and Don Myers will perform in between the readings on the Ankeny Campus.

Kocher and Averill will also read their works from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., Mon., Apr. 14 at the DMACC Boone Campus.  Rob Lumbard will perform prior to the Boone Campus readings starting at 10 a.m. in the L.W. Courter Center.

Giles and Gay will also read their works from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Tues., Apr. 15 in the DMACC Urban Campus Student Lounge.  Sam Miller will perform prior to the readings.

In addition, poet Rustin Larson and prose writer Gary Eller will read from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., Mon., Apr. 14 at the DMACC Newton Campus.  Prose writer Tim Bascom and poet Steve Benson will speak from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., Tues., Apr. 15 at the DMACC Carroll Campus.  Poet Jody Swilky and prose writer John Domini will read from 2:25 to 3:50 p.m., Tues., Apr. 15 at the DMACC West Campus.

All events are free and open to the public.
