Posted 4/9/08

The Iowa SkillsUSA Statewide Competition and Exhibition is set for 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday, April 25th at Des Moines Area Community College’s (DMACC) Ankeny Campus.

About 450 students will compete in various events to showcase their talents and the workforce skills they have honed during the past school year. Contests include Prepared Speech, Job-Skill Demonstration, Automated Manufacturing, Electronics, Robotics, HVAC, Welding, and many more.

Contests in Carpentry, Masonry TeamWorks, and Plumbing will be held at the Air National Guard Base at the Des Moines Airport.  Exhibitions including Welding and Biotechnology will also be showcased at DMACC.

Winners will advance to the national competition to be held in June in Kansas City, MO, where more than $1 million in scholarship money is available. This also is a good opportunity for students to make contacts with employers and post-secondary institutions.  Schools participating on the April 25th event at DMACC include many of Iowa’s High Schools and Community Colleges throughout the state.

SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry representatives working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. The national organization serves teachers, and high school and college students who are preparing for careers in technical, skilled and service arenas.
