Guidelines for Required Assessment

DMACC requires assessment of all new full-time students (12 credit hours or more Fall & Spring semesters, 8 credit hours or more Summer semester). This assessment provides information about students’ academic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. Assessment information is then used in course selection and schedule planning.

Options (only one option is required) for completing the assessment requirement:

  1. Testing on campus. To schedule testing, contact the campus nearest you for an appointment.
  2. Submitting an ACT of 19 or higher in reading, writing, and math. (All ACT scores must be sent).
**If ACT scores are more than 3 years old, the student is encouraged to complete option 1.
  3. Providing evidence of successful college experience in math, reading, and writing course work.
**If college experience is older than five (5) years, students are strongly encouraged to take the COMPASS test.
Writing: Grade of C or higher in a college-level writing course
Reading: Grade of C or higher in 6 hours of college-level academic course work such as psychology, sociology, economics, etc., and/or vocational technical course work requiring comparable reading skills
Math: Grade of C or higher in a college-level mathematics course

Students planning to enroll part-time are encouraged to:

  1. Complete a mathematics assessment before enrolling for a math class or a class with a math prerequisite.
  2. Complete a writing assessment before enrolling for a writing class.
  3. Complete a reading assessment before enrolling for a third credit class.

If you need to test, call the campus you plan to attend to make a reservation. If you need to test with an accommodation because of a disability, you will need to provide documentation of the disability and make arrangements with the testing center on the campus you plan to attend.
