Action Shortcut
Archiving or "zipping"
files and folders.
Archiving files and folders creates a copy of the items in a compressed file. Archived files take up less disk space than uncompressed files, so archiving is useful for making backup copies of your data or sending information over the Internet. To archive a file or folder:
  1. Select an item or items in the Finder.
  2. Choose File > Create Archive.

If you archive a single item, the archived file has the name of the original item with a ".zip" extension. If you archive multiple items at once, the archived file is called Archive.zip.

When you open an archived file, the archive is replaced by a folder that contains uncompressed copies of the original items.
Burning a CD-R or DVD. If your computer has a CD-writer or SuperDrive, you can burn files onto CD discs using the Finder. By default, Mac OS X burns CD discs in a format that can also be used on non-Macintosh computers.

  2. If you see a dialog, you can choose an action from the pop-up menu and select "Make this action the default" if you want the same thing to happen every time you insert a blank disc. Then click OK.
  3. Type a name for the disc under the CD icon.
  4. Drag files and folders to the open disc window and arrange the files exactly as you want them. The names of files, folders, and the disc can't be changed after the CD is burned.
  5. Choose File > Burn Disc.
