Each calendar year starting in early January we will start a new group of apprentices. If your company would like to enter one or more apprentices into the program, it is suggested to do it as early as possible before January; however if room exists it is possible for DMACC to accept applicants a few weeks before the start date.
This program will enhance the skills of current workers within a participating company in the precision machining trades. This leads to having national recognized credentials that are granted through a registered program with the Department of Labor / Office of Apprenticeship (DOL/OA). The skills standards are based on the National Institute of Metalworking Skills (NIMS) skill standards. The NIMS organization has created these skill standards using an expert panel assembled from national leading companies.
After the completion of machinist registered apprenticeship you are considered a journeyperson. An option would be to complete 12 semester credit hours at DMACC and receive an AGS degree. This degree is highly transferable to many institutions. Your registered apprenticeship completion would account for the 52 elective credits in this degree requirement.
General Overview:
DMACC’s machinist registered apprenticeship program began on January 12, 2007. We are looking for companies and individuals within companies that want to participate with a registered program through the Department of Labor. After completion of the complete program you will be a nationally-recognized journeyperson machinist.
Registered apprenticeship is a three-way joint partnership between Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC), The Department of Labor (DOL), and participating companies. Each of the three entities has their role to play in a successful registered apprenticeship program. Listed below are the general responsibilities of each:
- DMACC will provide the Related Technical Instruction or RTI each Friday in a full-day format. There will be some Fridays due to the college calendar and holidays that we will not have RTI training. Listed below (schedule area) are the Fridays in the 1st year (2007) that we will meet. The full RTI training will be delivered in two years. Each year will be 325 clock hours for a grand total of 650 hours over the two year period. See the standards document for break-out of hours in the different subject areas. You will still have 5600 hours to complete with your employer before you are a journeyperson.
- DOL/OA will register companies to participate in the program. The DOL is the issuing agency of the credentials and works with companies and DMACC to ensure the proper procedures are followed. The DOL does not handle money for the cost of the RTI training, this will handled by Mike Waters, Director of Apprenticeship at DMACC.
- Companies will register with the DOL and agree to commit one or more employees to the program. The work schedule will need to accommodate the Friday daytime delivery of the RTI training at DMACC Ankeny campus. Employees must receive a minimum of 5600 hours of On-the-Job-Learning OJL related to the registered apprenticeship standards. There are reporting requirements by the company to verify these hours to the DOL.

We will begin classes at 7:30am and end at 4:15pm each class day allowing for a 45- minute lunch period. All the classes unless otherwise specified will be at the Ankeny Campus, building 3-East with a room assignment to be arranged.
Cost
There is no cost of registering with the DOL and services related to registered apprenticeship with the DOL. The cost of the RTI at DMACC will be $2500.00 per year, per participant for the 2008 calendar year. Every effort is made to make this affordable. Instructors
The instructors for this program will vary depending on subject matter. Several subjects will be taught during any Friday session and since we have many instructors with focused disciplines we will rotate instructors as needed.
