Hi I'm Galen  

Galen Briggs joined DMACC as a Telecommunications Instructor in February 2001. His experience and education bring a mix of technologies and applications from several different perspectives.

Galen's career in telecommunications started with the United States Air Force, where he was trained as a network control technician.

While serving over 7 years with the Air Force, Galen became well versed with many different switching, transmission and data networking technologies. His last three years of service were spent performing system planning, circuit design, and equipment validation testing.

 

After leaving the Air Force, Galen returned to his home in Iowa and secured employment with MWR Telecom as a Circuit Engineer supporting the Iowa Communications Network (ICN). Galen then moved into management with MWR Telecom as a Field Operations Supervisor, responsible for transmission system and Outside Plant maintenance for the ICN. As Field Operations manager for McLeodUSA, Galen was responsible for the maintenance of over 10,000 route miles of fiber, the activation of a Class 4/5 switching center, over 600 transmission facilities, McLeodUSA's utility locate one call center, and a staff of over 80 maintenance and installation technicians. During this time he also served on the Iowa One Call Board of Directors, representing fiber optic companies and Competitive Local Exchange Carriers (CLEC).

Galen has been awarded an A.A.S. in Electronic Systems Technology and a B.S. in Computer Information Systems Management.


Hi I'm Jay  

Jay Nickelson joined DMACC West Campus in August of 2000. His background in electronics and telecommunications has spanned over the last 16 years.

Jay has worked with various telecom companies including MWR Telecom, McLeodUSA, Iowa Communication Network and the United States Coast Guard.

His career experiences he brings to DMACC West Campus Telecom are fiber optic communications, operations management, local loop fault finding and engineering, switching systems and overall network operations. His career in telecom has included duties from training officer, NOC technician, electronics technician, telecom technician and operations management.

Jay has formal training from the U.S. Coast Guard Electronics and Telephony Academy and Edison State College.
